  Research interests

  PucciniastriiformisWestend. f. sp. tritici Eriks (Pst), an obligate parasitic fungi, causes devastating stripe rust disease in wheat worldwide. Resistance wheat cultivars is usually overcome quickly by the rapid emergence of new virulent Pst races, which frequently leads to the epidemic of the disease. Pst can not be cultivated in vitro and lack the stable transformation system, which hinder the intensive researches on the Pst pathogenic mechanism. It is particularly urgent to reveal the mechanism of Pst-wheat interactions to develop new strategies for durable disease control pertinently. Hence my research mainly focuses on the identification of Pst virulence factors and host response regulators during Pst-wheat interactions. Especially focus on the Pst haustorium, a specialized infection structure to take nutrients from their host, and establish an intimate feeding relationship. Also concentrate on the host hypersensitive response (HR) to restrain the Pst growth and reproduction. These studies will substantially provide new insights in revealing the mechanism of interactions between Pst and wheat, and offer a new strategy to engineer durable resistance cultivars through the modulation of pathogen genes or host genes, which is of great theoretical and practical significance for the sustainable control of the stripe rust.
